Ghost

A wasteland, a city in ruin,
A country fallen down in war.
A monument seen by strangers, so many,
Come from near, come from far.
But it is a wonder, they see it how,
As though it has been dead for long.
But as I stand before that arch,
It beckons me with beating heart.
I hear the drumming of the slodier's march,
A steady pace, that solid gait.
Long strides that have no time to waste,
Soles worn away in ages past,
With the petty act of haste.
There shines bright silver, not copper, or even brass,
Frayed with time and effort consumed,
On many fields of broken glass.
I marvel at that ghost of mine,
As it holds my sight so firm.
And as I break that chilling bond,
I lose again my gaze of jade.
